Jawayria Hashmi – Diversity, Cooperation, and Growth: a First-Year EDISS Experience

During her first year at Åbo Akademi University in the Erasmus Mundus EDISS programme, Jawayria highlights a transformative blend of academic challenge, personal development, and a strong sense of community. A key learning experience came from a collaborative project on reliability estimation for adaptive distributed embedded systems, where limited existing research encouraged the team to explore new ideas and modelling approaches (see the project poster here and promotional video of the project here).

Orientation activities — including a memorable name-learning frisbee game — helped build an immediate sense of belonging within a diverse international cohort. Throughout the year, supportive professors and an open academic environment provided guidance whenever challenges arose. Frequent presentations, poster sessions, and pitching workshops significantly strengthened her communication and presentation skills.

Above all, the EDISS community became her first network abroad, serving as an important foundation for his academic journey and future international career.
