Lameya Islam – Building Community and Trustworthy AI: A First-Year EDISS Experience

During her first year in the Erasmus Mundus EDISS programme, Lameya experienced a rich combination of academic learning, cultural exchange, and strong community building.

International friendships played a central role in her journey, fostered through collaborative project work, shared activities, and informal gatherings such as multicultural potluck dinners and movie nights.

Group-based learning extended beyond the classroom, reinforcing teamwork and collaboration while creating lasting memories, including exploring new cities together during the EDISS Winter School. Academically, she contributed to a year-long project on explainable artificial intelligence for medical applications, developing a trustworthy AI model to predict breast cancer from mammogram images, with broader potential for other cancer types.

The programme also strengthened her presentation and communication skills and provided advanced technical training through courses in GPU programming, parallel programming, and data-driven computing architectures. These competencies have proven directly relevant to her current role as a research intern in Finland, where she works on large language models and security, demonstrating the strong alignment between EDISS coursework and real-world professional practice.
