Reflecting on her first year within the Erasmus Mundus EDISS programme, Mariama describes an experience defined by challenge, enjoyment, and diversity.
Academic projects carried out in multidisciplinary teams played a central role in developing essential communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey ideas, actively listen, and collaborate effectively with peers from different backgrounds.
Beyond academics, participating in new activities—such as trying curling for the first time—made her introduction to Finnish culture both memorable and engaging. She emphasises the importance of building friendships when studying abroad, noting how a strong social network enhances everyday life, encourages exploration of the city, and provides support when facing challenges. Overall, her first year in EDISS highlights a balanced learning environment that fosters personal growth, teamwork, and a strong sense of community.
