Halidu Abdulai – Exploring AI and Data Science at the University of the Balearic Islands – An EDISS Student Experience

In his second year at the University of the Balearic Islands, Halidu found an inspiring blend of academic depth, collaboration, and cultural experiences. Choosing the Data Science specialisation, he engaged with a carefully structured curriculum that provided strong foundations in machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and large language models, including the underlying mathematics of convolutional neural networks and diffusion models.

Alongside his coursework, he completed an innovative project using a particle filter to build a computer-vision-based hand-tracking game, highlighting the programme’s emphasis on hands-on, applied learning. His thesis, titled “Employing Large Language Models For Systematic Extraction of Nanoparticle Designs From Scientific Literature” further reflects the cutting-edge nature of EDISS, exploring the use of large language models to extract nanoparticle design information from scientific literature for drug development research.

Beyond academics, collaboration with peers from around the world enriched his learning experience, while memorable moments — such as attending a Copa del Rey semi-final at the Santiago Bernabéu — made the year truly unforgettable.

His advice to incoming students: embrace collaboration, step outside your comfort zone, and learn from the diverse EDISS community.
