Shihabur Rahman Samrat – From classical computer vision to explainable AI: a second-year EDISS experience in Mallorca

During his second year in the EDISS programme at the University of the Balearic Islands in Mallorca, Shihabur specialised in computer vision and data science, combining rigorous technical training with an enriching international experience.

Academically, the year placed strong emphasis on the fundamentals of classical computer vision, including image preprocessing, filtering, and edge detection. A particularly formative project involved designing an algorithm to count people in crowded beach images under strict constraints that excluded modern machine learning methods, fostering a deep understanding of core vision principles.

His master’s thesis further advanced his research profile, focusing on the use of machine learning and explainable AI to support the design of bone implants by analysing chemical additives and their beneficial properties, using curated data from scientific literature.

Beyond academics, living in Mallorca offered extensive opportunities for cultural exchange, travel across Europe, and shared experiences with fellow EDISS students, contributing to a strong sense of community.

Now pursuing a PhD, he reflects on EDISS as a key foundation for an academic career and encourages incoming students to embrace initial challenges with confidence, knowing that perseverance leads to both growth and achievement.
