Melih Kurtaran – from Software Engineering to Data Science Leadership: an EDISS Alumnus’ Journey

Melih shares his experience in EDISS, reflecting on the academic, personal, and professional growth he achieved during the programme. He highlights the winter schools—particularly the first one in Lapland—as the most memorable aspect of EDISS, combining intensive academic work with unique cultural and social activities that fostered strong connections among students.

The alumnus emphasizes the importance of persistence, active participation, and seeking support, especially during demanding project-based courses such as the Data-intensive Engineering Project. He notes the accessibility and supportiveness of EDISS faculty, encouraging future students to ask questions and leverage the programme’s strong academic network. A key personal development he attributes to EDISS is a significant improvement in public speaking and self-confidence, gained through frequent presentations and collaboration within diverse international teams.

Professionally, EDISS enabled his transition from a background in software engineering to a career in data science. Through internships, thesis work, and advanced coursework, he gained hands-on experience that led to a data science role in an international company.

Now continuing his career as a data scientist in his home country, he looks ahead to leadership and management roles, aspiring to combine technical expertise with team leadership. His story illustrates how EDISS prepares graduates not only for technical excellence but also for confident communication, collaboration, and long-term career development in data-intensive fields.
